Join Cantor Beth at Rio Grande Park (formerly Kit Carson Park) for the Tashlikh / Casting Off ritual.

Please do not bring bread or any type of food to toss into the water. Ditches and arroyos flow back to the river, and decomposing food pollutes and disrupts the natural balance of our water creating excess nitrogen which in turn, creates deadly algae blooms that deplete the oxygen necessary for plants and animals to survive and live in the water.

We will chant, share, pray, meditate and then choose native leaves, small stones and sticks to cast off - or bring your tallit and shake it over the water. Click here for prayer sheet / Download and print your own —prayer sheets will be provided at the park.

We will then walk a short distance (200 feet or less) on the flat gravel pathways next to the moving water in Clear Ditch which runs along the west side of the park. If the Rio Grande has water, people are also welcome to walk or drive to the river overlook across the road at Tingley Beach Park or from the bridge on Central Ave. to finish Tashlikh on their own.

Rio Grande Park parking lot is located at the corner of Tingley Drive SE and Alcalde Drive SE —Kit Carson Dr. runs on the east side of the park.

YIDDISH SONG WORKSHOP AND ZINGERAY (Sing-along):
Join members of A Glezele Tey Duo for an afternoon of singing Yiddish folk songs and learning about Ashkenazi music & culture, with live musical accompaniment! From old classics to newly written melodies, we will explore the breadth and depth of the Yiddish song movement and the current surge of creativity & cross-generational collaboration happening today! Songbooks will be provided, and participants will come away with the tools to continue singing and creating new interpretations, translations, and songs of their own. No prior knowledge of Yiddish or singing required. All ages are welcome!

SIMCHA SCHOOL brings us Ranger Bill Pentler for an engaging hands-on presentation about our Albuquerque eco-system. ALL ARE WELCOME!

RANGER WILLIAM (BILL) PENTLER grew up in Wisconsin fascinated by animals and nature. He holds degrees in Zoology and Psychology. After college, Bill became a lead zookeeper at Lion Country Safari in Florida for more than 8 years and also was the Education Coordinator at the park for 5 of those years. Bill moved to Albuquerque in 1995 and worked at the Rio Grande Zoo for a few years, then shifted to State Parks as a Law Enforcement State Park Ranger and Park Naturalist at Fenton Lake in the Jemez Mountains for over 3 years. He moved back to Albuquerque and started working for the City at the Animal Shelters as a Supervisor. After 2 years Bill transferred to the Open Space Division and recently retired after working with them for 17 years. Many of us have enjoyed planting trees in the Bosque with Bill and the other Open Space Rangers for Tu B’shevat. Bill is an avid photographer and was recently accepted as a board member to the Open Space Alliance. He volunteers around the city as an environmental educator.

You don’t want to miss Goddess of Arno Balkan Band’s 27th Annual Fall Balkan Dance Party THIS Saturday, December 13th from 7-9pm! It will take place at Nahalat Shalom, 3606 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, ABQ, NM. Suggested donation of $20 per person at the door - no one turned away for lack of funds! The band will be set up “village style” - playing acoustically in a circle in the middle of the room and dancers around them. A nigun  (meaning "melody" in Hebrew) is a wordless tune, sung in repetition and with devotion, to stir the soul and take us where words cannot. Drawing from the wellspring of Jewish mystical tradition, we'll sing nigunim new and old. No prior experience required! If there are nigunim that you know and would enjoy sharing, please feel free to bring and to teach!
