Have you wondered why we call organized prayer, “services”? We gather together in sacred space to “serve,” to do sacred work with and for each other.

The Shabbat morning “service” is not a random collection of prayers. It is a journey taking us both out of ourselves and into ourselves. Through prayer, chant, song, movement, and meditation, we will travel the path of the Jewish mystics to the sacred heart of Shabbat.

Here is the handout for the service

Refresh your souls with shared song, worship, and learning. New and old melodies in a traditional-ish service including creative ways to make the parashah come alive - drama, storytelling, discussion. Families with children (even very young!) are especially encouraged to join - we expect your children to act like children and that is welcome! May they absorb the joy and song around them like the sponges they are. Kiddush and oneg to follow - feel free to bring something to share.

Chanting Kabbalat Shabbat with Judy Brown and Sofie Shefia Stephanie Cohen - In Person

Let’s welcome the arrival of the Sabbath Bride by chanting sacred phrases together and, in the silence after the chant, receive the blessings of Shabbat. In this week’s parsha, Joseph reveals the truth to his brothers who had sold him into slavery.  He forgives them, and shares his views on the unintended consequences of their evil plan, which turned out to save humanity.  Embracing the paradox, Joseph’s family is reunited as his true self is revealed.

Queer Shabbat - CANCELLED FOR DECEMBER

Queer Shabbat is cancelled for the month of December, but check back on the Nahalat Shalom website at the beginning of 2024 for details about the January Shabbat

Queer Shabbat is a monthly ritual space for reflection, connection, grounding in the sacred cycles of Jewish time. This is a space for self-identified Queer Jews and their loved ones to gather. We will be hosting hybrid Queer Shabbat OUTDOOR IN-PERSON (or in Bayt B’racha, if weather is bad) and also on ZOOM. Masks are optional. We will be distanced and outside. Whether you are attending virtually or in person, you're invited to bring: songs, poetry, movement, creative activities, and meditations from your heart. Bring your own (vegetarian) food if you'd like to eat while we chat after the service. Ritual items and challah welcome. For any questions please contact queershabbatnahalatshalom@gmail.org.

In Person and Zoom: Journey to the Heart of Shabbat

Meeting ID: 282 164 4305
No Passcode Required

Have you wondered why we call organized prayer, “services”? We gather together in sacred space to “serve,” to do sacred work with and for each other.

The Shabbat morning “service” is not a random collection of prayers. It is a journey taking us both out of ourselves and into ourselves. Through prayer, chant, song, movement, and meditation, we will travel the path of the Jewish mystics to the sacred heart of Shabbat.
