For most of our history as a congregation, Nahalat Shalom has been fortunate to observe the Birthday of the World each year by meeting in the dark at the volcanos on the west side of Albuquerque to greet the sunrise across the Rio Grande Valley.

This year Nahalat Shalom’s sunrise service is evolving in some exciting ways: We will be meeting in the North Valley at the Los Poblanos Open Space, a sister sacred place to the volcanos, a place where humans have been greeting the sun rising over the Sandia Mountains for many centuries.  Another evolution to our tradition is that this year our sunrise service will be held on Rosh Hashanah Day 2, appropriately SUNday, September 13.  

We will arrive at 6am to walk to about 5 minutes from the parking lot off Montano NW) to the gazebo area, where there is a clear view of the mountains, and gather to chant the sun up, welcoming the new year of 5787!
