AWARD WINNING STORYTELLER & AUTHOR MARK BINDER is coming to Albuquerque with his show,
“You Can’t Sing” he said…and I believed him!
The NM Jewish Storytelling Festival and Storytellers of New Mexico are bringing Mark Binder to FUSION’s Cell Theater for his lying, storytelling, and books tour. "YOU CAN'T SING!” He said it. And I believed him isa solo show full of tales, tunes, and talk about the power of changing stories to transform how we live.
A student of famed storyteller Spalding Gray, Mark has toured the world for the past twenty years, transmitting joy with award-winning books, audio and spoken word stories for diverse audiences. He has performed in parking lots and basements, in theaters, at festivals, pubs, churches, synagogues, nightclubs and schools around the world. He believes that now, more than ever, “We Need Good Stories.”
And on November 7th, he will bring his stories to the Cell Theater in Albuquerque.
From an urban Cinderella to a Jewish village on the edge of the Black Forest to a dive bar in Manhattan, Mark Binder blends spoken-word storytelling and music, with a sarcastic dollop of transformational seminar-speak. “You Can’t Sing” is an uplifting show about upgrading the stories we tell ourselves.
Joining Mark is Albuquerque’s own Jordan Wax. Accordionist and Yiddish songster Jordan Wax comes from New Mexico’s high desert. His music gathers the tributaries of many traditions — his Eastern European family’s Yiddish songs and the old Norteño polkas, marches and chotises he inherited from elder accordionists.
Among his many performances as a soloist and as a member of the band, Lone Piñon, award-winning Wax has performed at the Library of Congress, Lincoln Center the Kennedy Center, and with Itzhak Perlman.
No Depression magazine called his work “a testament to survival,”and the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures described his collective’s work with New Mexican traditions as “a truly exceptional embodiment of cultural integrity that keeps our communities thriving.”
“You Can’t Sing” is at The Cell Theater (700 1st Street NW, Albuquerque) on November 7th at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $24 for adults and $18 for students and seniors and can be purchased at www.fusionabq.org. This program is not suitable for children under 10.
