ARTIST STATEMENT

The current show at Nahalat Shalom is my first time presenting many of the prints from my Empire Zinc Strike Series all in one room! Surprisingly, five years ago, before I moved to New Mexico from Chicago, the movie ‘Salt of the Earth’ was almost the only thing I knew about my new home! Doing such a deep dive focus on miner’s union history here has helped me to travel the Southwest and meet great people; some of whom were actual participants in the Empire Zinc Strike. These kinds of connections helped me find my place here.

Other recent prints relate to seed bank efforts by indigenous women in the Santa Clara Pueblo community, the Downwinders fighting for compensation for radiation exposure health issues from the Trinity Site nuclear test bomb, and the Gallup Miner’s strike in 1933.

Some newer works, focus on the issues of fighting large AI Data Centers or stopping the construction of hypersonic weapons facilities in New Mexico. My work reflects deep dives into historic data and also direct contact with the effected communities. My work upholds the work of these local communities and honors their history in a way that celebrates the beauty in resistance.

I have studied printmaking in Mexico, and the woodcut style of emergency response street art there has influenced my work. I do my printing at Remarque Print Workshop. and also work with the Herstory Printmaking Collective.
