While Ashkenazi Jews (of European descent) present as the social and cultural norm within
Israeli society, they don’t necessarily see or think of themselves in racial or ethnic terms
because by now, "aren't we all Israeli?" Yiddish has been replaced with Hebrew, exile with
occupation, the shtetl with the kibbutz. But what are the views of the Mizrahim (Jews of
North African and Middle Eastern descent)? How did the "Others" of Europe become the
"Europe" of the others?
