Bio Cathy Schechter

Writer, teacher and Maggidah Cathy Schechter teaches individuals and classes from her home in Austin, Texas. A 14-year Talmud student/chevruta with Rabbi Judith Abrams z”l, she earned her MAJS from Hebrew College. She is an alumnus of the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, and received smichah as Maggidah/Omanit through Reclaiming Judaism. She co-authored Deep in the Heart: Lives & Legends of Texas Jews (Eakin Press, 1990) with Ruthe Winegarten, z”l, and contributed to Stars of David, edited by Hollace Weiner & Rabbi Ken Roseman (Brandeis Press, 2007). A longtime activist in Austin’s Jewish community, her proudest volunteer accomplishment (so far) was to be one of seven founding mothers of the Child Development Center at Austin’s Congregation Beth Israel. She is married to Eddie Selig, is the mother of four adult children, and is Jack’s Savta.
