Overview
of Youth Bar/Bat Mitzvah Preparation Program
B’nai Mitzvah Class:
a
bar/bat mitzvah preparation class for 6th and 7th
graders. Builds community and support among youth preparing
and/or completing their bar/bat mitzvah ceremonies. Includes
review of prayer service, work on mitzvah project, Torah study,
study of Jewish history and ethics as well as issues related to
becoming a young Jewish adult. Taught by Hadar Ma’ayan with
participation of Rabbi Brin and Cantorial Director Beth Cohen.

Meets
Thursdays 4:30-6 pm and occasional Shabbat and holidays.

Cost:
$360.00 plus books (limited partial scholarships available)
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutoring:
private tutoring with Musical Director Beth Cohen in preparation
for bar/bat mitzvah service. Covers learning all prayers and
songs necessary to lead Shabbat morning service, trope (musical
notation of Torah), and chanting Torah portion. Takes
approximately one year of weekly (1/2 hour) sessions to prepare
for ceremony but may be more or less depending on previous
exposure and learning at cheder or synagogue and individual
abilities. Requirements can be modified based on individual
learning needs.

Cost:
$18.00/ per ½ hr. session (limited partial scholarships may be
available through the synagogue) plus purchase of study tape
($12.00)
Preparation with Rabbi for
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Ceremony: Must
be current members of Congregation Nahalat Shalom to schedule
bar/bat mitzvah (partial membership scholarships available).

Bar/bat
mitzvah candidate and family should meet with Rabbi
approximately one year in advance to check Hebrew skills and
arrange date.
·
Two family
meetings with the Rabbi as well as a run-through rehearsal
Friday morning before the bar/bat mitzvah ceremony.

Students
will meet with the Rabbi individually for at least three other
meetings to work on the D’var Torah (speech), which will be
scheduled directly with the Rabbi. Parents are encouraged but
not required to attend these additional meetings.

Meetings
with Rabbi are covered by membership dues. Families are asked to
provide booklets for the ceremony, sponsor a community oneg
(wine, juice & challah), and make a donation to the synagogue
which typically ranges typically ranges from $360.00 to $3600.00
in honor of the child’s bar/bat mitzvah.
