Nahalat Shalom is a vibrant, welcoming community with a thriving school called the Cheder.  Membership is not required, and we welcome children of mixed heritage to our small and friendly synagogue community.  Scholarships are available.

Our Mission:  Our children will develop a positive Jewish identity, while learning and growing in their knowledge and understanding of Judaism, and become part of Nahalat Shalom's vibrant community.

Our Values:  Along with Jewish learning, we emphasize treating each other with compassion and respect.  We strive to build a school communty of learners and friends who are engaged in actions that make the world a better place.  We hope that the students and their families will become an active part of the Nahalat Shalom congregation--a place where all can feel welcome in celebrating Jewish religion, culture, spirituality, and heritage.

Our Gan class (Pre-K) meets one Shabbat (Saturday morning each month) or for holiday sessions (10-11:30 am).  It is a joyful and nurturing class which includes learning about Shabbat and Jewish holidays, stories, drama, art, snack, dance, singing, and encouraging Jewish values such as peace, fairness, and treating each other well. Parents are welcome to either drop off or attend the class with their children.

Our Children's Education program for elementary students (K-6) meets on Thursdays from 4:30-6pm.  It includes t’fillot (prayers and songs), Hebrew language learning, history, holidays, art, drama, snack, and much much more!  Curriculum is age appropriate.

Our B’nai Mitzvah Class, a bar/bat mitzvah preparation class for 7th or 8th graders, builds community and support among youth preparing and/or completing their bar/bat mitzvah ceremonies. The class meets once a month on Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 with Rabbi Brin.  Students meet individually with Cantorial Soloist Beth Cohen and Rabbi Brin to prepare for their big day.   Membership is required to become a b'nai mitzvah at Nahalat Shalom.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutoring:

Private tutoring with Musical Director and Cantorial Soloist Beth Cohen in preparation for bar/bat mitzvah service. This study covers learning all prayers and songs necessary to lead Shabbat morning service, trope (musical notation of Torah), and chanting the Torah portion. It takes approximately one year of weekly (1/2 hour) sessions to prepare for the ceremony but may be more or less depending on previous exposure and learning at cheder or synagogue and individual abilities. Requirements can be modified based on individual learning needs.   The student will need to schedule sessions individually with Beth.

Preparation with Rabbi for Bar/Bat Mitzvah Ceremony:

The family must be current members of Congregation Nahalat Shalom to schedule a bar/bat mitzvah (partial membership scholarships are available).

The bar/bat mitzvah candidate and family should meet with the Rabbi approximately one year in advance to check Hebrew skills and arrange date.  Two family meetings with the Rabbi will be scheduled, as well as a run-through rehearsal Friday morning before the bar/bat mitzvah ceremony.  Students will meet with the Rabbi individually for at least three other meetings to work on the D’var Torah (speech), which will be scheduled directly with the Rabbi. Parents are encouraged but not required to attend these additional meetings.  Families are asked to provide booklets for the ceremony, sponsor a community oneg (wine, juice & challah), and make a donation to the synagogue.  Contact Rabbi Brin
