Make for yourself a teacher, and acquire for yourself a friend.
-- Pirkei Avot 1:6
At Nahalat Shalom’s Cheder, your children will find both.
In New Mexico, our children are often the only Jewish students in their schools. At Cheder, Nahalat Shalom’s once-a-week Hebrew school, we give our children the chance to be with other Jewish kids and families while they learn about their precious Jewish heritage through creative and joyful experiences.
Our program starts at 4:30 every Thursday afternoon with Tefila (prayers) and Zemirot (songs), followed by a healthy snack. The children (grades K‐8) are divided into three levels based primarily on age, but also on Hebrew proficiency. Our curriculum includes:
- Hebrew reading
Bat/Bar Mitzvah readiness
Ethics & Community Service
History and Culture
- Tikkun Olam (Repair the World) & Shomrei Adamah (Guardians of the Earth)
As always, expression through art of many forms will hold a significant place in all of our programs. Our three main teachers are Seth Hoffman, Chuck Buxbam, and joining us this year, Marisa Nochumson, mother of Bayla and Solomon. Amy Sweet will help at the start with Marisa's transition. Erwin Melis will continue to work with the pre‐K kids one Sunday a month, and Diane Palley will help us create art projects. Cantors Beth Cohen and JoAnn Rice will also help us at times with Tefilot, songs, and music.
Finally, we have a theme this year ‐‐ Shomrei Adamah ‐ "Guardians of the Earth" (from Genesis 2:15). We will bring this traditional Jewish value into our entire curriculum, learning blessings for the wonders of nature and the different kind of food we eat. We will investigate our ancient tradition that teaches us how to live in harmony and respect with the earth and the other creatures who share this holy ground with us.
No one is ever too old to begin Cheder ‐ or have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We help every family create a meaningful experience for their child. Please try us out for a few weeks this fall to see if this authentic, joyful experience is right for your family.
