Workshop with Christina Crowder of The Klezmer Institute—
Trampled Manuscripts: Exploring Non-Dance Repertoire in the Makonovetsky Manuscript

A chance encounter in Tokyo a few years ago led to the sharing of a unique corpus of musical manuscripts from the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine previously unavailable to klezmer musicians and scholars through an international, community-driven digital humanities project called the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project (KMDMP). In this workshop we’re going to focus on some Makonovetsky’s non-dance repertoire. Through the tunes presented here we’ll figure out which nign is played before the kugel among the Chernobler Hasidim, and which one comes after it, and we’ll investigate how klezmorim ranked the various pieces in their repertoire by economic value.
