Struggling with the Burden of the Holocaust: Towards Finding a
Way to Resolve the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (Sunday Evening
Program and Reception)
With Guest
Speaker Professor Dan Bar-On Professor of Psychology, Department
of Behavioral Sciences Ben Gurion University
American
Associates, Ben Gurion University Greater Texas Region and
Temple Beth
Shalom, 205 East Barcelona Road, Santa Fe, NM 87505
Professor Dan
Bar-On was born in 1938 in Haifa to parents of German descent.
He was a member of Kibbutz Revivim for 25 years where he worked
in the Kibbutz clinic, specializing in therapy and research with
families of Holocaust survivors. In 1981 he received his Ph.D.
at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In 1985 he
launched a pioneering field of research in Germany, studying the
psychological and moral aftereffects of the Holocaust on the
children of the perpetrators. Prof. Bar-On has brought together
descendants of survivors and perpetrators for five intensive
encounters (the TRT group, shown by the BBC on TimeWatch,
October, 1993), as well as students from the third generation of
both sides. This pioneering research in conflict negotiation has
been applied to programs promoting coexistence between Israelis
and Palestinians including the Peace Research Institute in the
Middle East (PRIME), of which Prof. Bar-On is Co-Director and
Project Coordinator.
Prof. Bar-On is
the author of such books as, Legacy of Silence: Encounters with
Children of the Third Reich (1989), now translated and published
in French, German, Japanese and Hebrew, Fear and Hope: Three
Generations of Holocaust Survivors’ Families, published in
Hebrew, English, German and Chinese and, most recently, The
Indescribable and Undiscussable (1999).
