May issue of Desert Sage
From the editor . . .
In this issue of Desert Sage, we commemorate Shavuot. In biblical times, it marked the end of the spring barley harvest and beginning of the summer wheat harvest. Following the destruction of the second Temple, Shavuot , meaning literally “weeks,” came to celebrate the seven-week journey that began with the Hebrews fleeing Egypt and culminated in the giving of the Torah and creation of the people Israel.
Both the biblical and modern meanings imply an evolution, a change. As we move away from the war in Iraq, may we pray that our nation of America also travels from the place of militarism, greed, and the destruction of other peoples, and embrace a new hope, a fresh direction and the compassionate law of Shekinah.
This issue also marks a one-year anniversary of our new, expanded format. The past 12 months have yielded many challenges and changes, but look at what we’ve created! And while this marks my last issue as editor, it is my hope that Desert Sage also continue to evolve and be a strong voice for our community.
Happy reading!
