Jewish Family Service
By Carolyn Sedalnick
Jewish Family Service is the community response to the needs of a growing Jewish population and follows the biblical mandate of tikun olam, repairing the world. The agency is steered by a board of directors who are guided by emerging community priorities, as well as individual needs, in their choice of programs. Their mission, guided by Jewish traditions and values, is to assist clients to develop, preserve and enhance their fullest human potential. JFS is a beneficiary of the Jewish Federation of Greater Albuquerque and a participating agency of United Way.
The following are a list of JFS services available here in Albuquerque.
CASE MANAGEMENT
Social Services provides home visits, coordination of services, assessment
and evaluation, along with limited financial assistance for local residents
and travelers.
CHILDCARE
Professional Nannies of New Mexico offers screened and qualified caregivers
on a full-or part-time basis for live-in/live-out care in the family home.
COUNSELING
The JFS staff of licensed, graduate-level therapists and clinicians can
assist with a variety of relational issues and offer a sliding-fee scale and
third-party payments.
EMERGENCY HOMEMAKER PROGRAM
To assist low-income seniors to remain at home following hospitalization or
an illness, this program provides temporary, short-term assistance in the
family home. A sliding-fee scale is offered to applicants who meet age,
income and residency requirements.
JEWISH COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY
Non-perishable food is provided to families with children, seniors and the
disabled.
IMMIGRATION, RESETTLEMENT & CITIZENSHIP SERVICES
Refugees settling in our community can access a range of assistance:
housing, medical care, job training and employment, language training, and
casement management. JFS also provides assistance with immigration issues
and preparation for the naturalization process.
HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SERVICES
Facilitated support groups, social and educational programs, case
management, emergency financial assistance, and aid in applying for various
compensation and restitution programs are among services offered by JFS.
SENIOR HOUSING
The David Specter Shalom House, a facility financed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, provides a safe living environment for low-income elderly.
SENIOR TRANSPORATION PROJECT
Registration is required for low-cost, door-to-door transportation.
Availability and the geographic area served may be limited but the service
is not.
VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Currently, we are conducting a survey involving Jewish elderly in the
community to identify needs that will be addressed with future programs.
FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION
Informational and education programs are offered to the community and
include topics such as A Caregiver’s Guide, death and loss, child
development, immigration law, etc.
For more information on these programs, contact Jewish Family Services at 291-1818.
