I’m Dreaming of a Green Hanukkah…
…when my grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoy toys and articles of clothing made by workers who enjoy a living wage and decent conditions at their place of work;
…when the gifts I purchase are made and sold locally, and shopping means dealing with local small-business people, artisans and craftspeople, thus keeping the profits in the community;
…when my purchases do not abuse our resources, but instead, are kind to the earth’s ecology;
…when my gift-wrapping is done without wasteful and expensive packaging;
…when my gifts actually help make the world a better place.
And the good news is that it is all very do-able, that with some creativity and thoughtfulness we can have a Hanukkah in which eco-kashrut is our guide, in which we make the principles of oshek (not oppressing workers) and bal tashchit (protection of the environment) paramount.
